Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers in the world . But let’s be honest, it’s also one of the most demanding.
Most teachers and TAs are incredible at pushing through, keeping going for the sake of the children and telling themselves they’ll “just get through to half term.”
But here’s the truth: if we ignore the early signs of burnout, it doesn’t just go away. It builds up quietly, slowly draining our energy, confidence and joy for the job we once loved. Trust me, I've been there and I never thought it would happen to me.
If you’ve been feeling “off” lately, here are some early warning signs to look out for:
Constant Fatigue: No matter how much sleep you get, you still feel exhausted, both physically and mentally.
Irritability: Snapping at students, colleagues, friends or family members over small things, or feeling frustrated much quicker than usual.
Loss of Joy: The things that used to light you up (like seeing a child finally “get it”) don’t feel as rewarding.
Brain Fog: Struggling to focus, forgetting things or finding it hard to make decisions.
Withdrawal: Avoiding the staffroom, feeling isolated or pulling back from social interactions.
Increased Illness: Picking up every bug going, or noticing headaches, stomach aches or other stress-related symptoms.
These are signs that your mind and body are trying to get your attention. They’re not a reason to feel guilty, they’re an invitation to pause, check in and take action before things get worse.
What You Can Do Right Now
Give yourself permission to slow down and take your own wellbeing seriously.
Choose one small act of self-care today. It might be leaving school on time, having a proper lunch break or doing something purely for you this evening.
Reflect honestly on where you’re at - are you surviving, coping or thriving?
If you’re reading this and thinking, “This is me,” you are not alone, and there is a way through this. It takes time but things will get better.
I’ve created a free Burnout Quiz to help you figure out where you are on the burnout scale. Your results will be sent along with my Teacher Reset Guide, which is packed with simple strategies to help you take back control of your energy and wellbeing.
👉 Take the quiz today and start your reset here.
You deserve to feel better, and the first step is recognising that something needs to change.
I'd love to hear more about you and your career in the classroom.
